A Facebook page, MTN – Ghana, is asking subscribers to register with them and win 100GB internet data.

The page further indicates that the gift is only available to only those who register with the company. The Facebook page provides a link through which subscribers could register and win the gift.

“Everyone is a winner,” it adds.

The link has also been shared on WhatsApp.

Verification

To verify whether or not the Facebook page is an official MTN Ghana page and whether the company is giving out 100GB data to subscribers, Dubawa contacted the corporate affairs directorate of the MTN.

The Corporate Affairs Manager at MTN, Efua Falconer, said the page had not come to her attention but added that she believed it was a scam.

“I want to believe it’s a scam because our pages are customized and standard,” she asserted.

Further, a click on the link takes you to another page where completely unrelated content is published.

The content advises people to smile, exercise, and have a lot of sleep, with no provision for the purported registration and the gift.

In March 2020, Dubawa fact-checked a similar claim which stated that MTN was giving free data to subscribers in lockdown areas in Ghana. The claim was rated false.

Based on the evidence above the claim has been rated false.

The reporter produced this fact-check under the auspices of the Dubawa 2020 Fellowship in partnership with The Finder Newspaper to facilitate the ethos of “truth” in journalism and to enhance media literacy in the country.
