Ablekuma van attack: Viral video claiming robbers have been arrested is false

Claim: A video has gone viral with a voiceover claiming that the robbers involved in the recent Ablekuma bullion van attack have been apprehended.

Verdict: The claim is false. As of the time of the claim, police were yet to apprehend any suspects.

On Thursday, June 22, 2023, a bullion van robbery occurred at Ablekuma Fan Milk in the Greater Accra Region. The incident led to the killing of a police officer, identified by a name tag as Amoah. 

The attack is said to have happened when the van arrived at the Star Oil Filling Station in the area to receive cash. 

Following the incident, social media users have been giving several commentaries.

Amidst the commentaries is a video with two persons in the background shouting that the police have apprehended the suspects.

“The robbers have been caught,” the people claimed.

The ten-second viral video shows a crowd gathered at a filling station that looks very similar to the one where the robbery attack happened.

The exact time the incident occurred on Thursday is unclear, but the claim about the robbers being apprehended began to go viral after 4:00pm local time on the very day of the incident.

Verification

We first checked with the Twitter page of the Ghana Police Service, and their only post on the matter, at the time, was a statement that said that they were on a manhunt for the robbers.

“The Police are on a manhunt to arrest a gang of four robbers who attacked a bullion van at Ablekuma Fan Milk, a suburb of Accra and shot the Police escort who has unfortunately passed on,” their post, made at 6:41pm local time reads.

We revisited the Twitter page of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, June 26, 2023, and no update had been issued on the matter.

DUBAWA Ghana has attempted to contact the Police Service via phone for updates. However, those calls have gone unanswered.

A statement released by the Police on Thursday, June 22, indicated that the robbers were still on the run.

Conclusion

The claim in the viral video that the robbers involved in Thursday’s attack have been apprehended is false. As of the time of filing this report, the police were yet to announce the arrest of any suspect.
