DUBAWA Ghana organised a two-day capacity-building workshop for journalists and media managers at the Adom cluster of Multimedia Group Ghana.

Held at the Adom building of Multimedia Group, Accra, on Monday, June 17, and Tuesday, June 18, 2024, the training sessions aimed to equip the participants with fact-checking skills, digital investigative tools, and the various ways they can protect themselves in seemingly dangerous cyberspace ahead of Ghana’s election in 2024.

The first training day saw facilitators taking participants through the current scope of information disorder and why journalists should care, especially in a crucial election year. Other sessions for the day included fact-checking steps and methodology, digital verification tools and skills, fact-checking ethics and standards, and how to employ the RTI law in fact-checking and journalistic practices.

The sessions were led by Maxine Gloria Danso, Expansion Lead at the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development; Nathan Gadugah, Editor for DUBAWA; Roselena Ahiable, DUBAWA’s Programmes Manager; and Musah Zakariah Tanko, Legal Practitioner and Lecturer at University of Media Arts and Communication, respectively.

Day two began with a session on Google digital verification tools and how to employ them in fact-checking and other journalistic duties. In her presentation, Roselena Ahiable educated participants on using Google tools like Google Lens for Reverse Image Search, Google Trends, Google Alerts, Google Pinpoint, and Google Maps for geolocation in journalistic practices.

The next sessions covered social media monitoring and digital tools for analysing trends and patterns, digital and cyber security, and an open session on election reporting led by Silas Jonathan, Emmanuel Quarcoo, and Nathan Gadugah, respectively.

Christian Amoadu Ohene, head of news for Akan brands at Multimedia Group, expressed gratitude for the two-day training. He commended the comprehensive and impactful nature of the training.

“These sessions have been really an eye-opening experience. I have learnt quite a few things for the first time here. There are many that I have understood better even though I knew, and of course, there are some that have reminded me of the things I knew days and years ago,” he said.

He was hopeful that Multimedia Group would keep in touch with DUBAWA for clarification on industry happenings periodically.

In her closing remarks on behalf of management, Martha Crentsil Acquah expressed appreciation for the two-day training, especially going into the election 2024 period.

“It has been great two days of training. The training is interconnected and understandable. It has been an eye-opener. We have sharpened our skills going into the election year. On behalf of our general manager and human resource management, I would like to say we are very grateful for the training,” she said.

She urged  DUBAWA to keep in touch and periodically come around to observe the impact of the training.

The two-day training at the Adom cluster was sponsored by the Google News Initiative.
