Is former IGP of Ghana dead?

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Claim: A Facebook page claims the former Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service is dead.

Full Text

In Ghana, the Inspector General of the Police (IGP)  is appointed by the president. Article 202 (1) of the 1992 Constitution posits:

“The Inspector-General of Police shall be appointed by the President acting in consultation with the Council of State.”

The Facebook page Amazing TV Ghana posted that the former IGP is dead.

“Breaking News: Ghana’s former IGP is dead,” the post was captioned with a bold picture of the immediate former IGP, Dr Akuffo Dampare.

The picture used in the post raised suspicions about whether the immediate former IGP had died or which of the previous IGPs had passed away.

As of April 26, 2026, the post generated 219 likes with several users seeking clarification on which of the former IGPs had passed away.

“Is it true?” one user, Philip Dubs, asked. Another user, Scaredem Junior, admonished the page, insisting that it is not true, and asked whether the page had “court money,” suggesting the post could land the page in legal trouble.

DUBAWA decided to probe further to ascertain whether a former IGP had indeed passed away and, if so, which one.

Verification

DUBAWA’s Google keyword search revealed that there is no news coverage by any major, credible media outlet in Ghana on the demise of Dr Akuffo Dampare. His demise would have attracted media attention, given the controversy around key figures before and after his removal. Publications on Dr Dampare date back to March, 2025, when he was removed from office.

However, a further search revealed several publications on the demise of Paul Tawiah Quaye, who served as Ghana’s IGP from 2009 to 2013.  He was appointed by the late Prof. John Evans Atta-Mills and served until his retirement. Further, DUBAWA found a press release from the Nii Korle Kulo Family confirming the demise of Mr Tawiah Quaye.

Conclusion

The claim that the former IGP is dead, with a picture of Dr Akuffo Dampare, is misleading. DUBAWA checks reveal that Dr Dmapare is alive. However, Paul Tawiah Quaye passed on April 21, 2026.
