A Facebook post (archived here) claims South Africa has released a “full list” of African countries eligible for visa-free entry in 2026 and that the list excludes Ghana and Nigeria.
The post lists 22 African countries allegedly covered by the updated policy and states that the move aims to promote tourism, regional integration and economic cooperation. It concludes that Ghana and Nigeria are not among the beneficiaries.
The claim had over 3,000 comments with as many as 235 shares.
DUBAWA decided to fact-check this claim because it has circulated widely on social media, raising questions about whether South Africa has withdrawn Ghana’s visa-free access.
Verification
A review of South Africa’s official immigration policy and existing bilateral agreements shows the claim is false. South Africa and Ghana signed a reciprocal visa waiver agreement that came into effect on 1 November 2023.
Under the agreement, holders of ordinary passports from both countries may travel visa-free for up to 90 days per year for tourism, business, or transit. The agreement has not been revoked.
South Africa’s official visa exemption schedule continues to list Ghana among countries whose ordinary passport holders are exempt from visa requirements for stays of up to 90 days.
Conclusion
The Facebook claim that South Africa’s 2026 visa-free policy excludes Ghana is false. Ghana continues to benefit from the reciprocal visa waiver agreement, in effect since November 2023, which allows ordinary passport holders to enter South Africa without a visa for up to 90 days per year.
