Communications member of the New Patriotic Party, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, says the current government is failing to manage the country’s economy.
He cited the cedi-to-dollar forex trading rate to back his assertion.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show on June 10, the spokesperson for Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, who is the 2028 presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party, claimed that the prevailing cedi-to-dollar conversion rate was evidence of the government’s inability to manage the economy.
“How do you say the NDC has managed the economy better when fuel prices moved from GHC 9 to GHC 15 within a week of the war in Iran? The NDC has no idea how to handle the economy. They have stopped talking about the dollar. Currently, it is trading at GHC 12.60 to the dollar. The NDC needs to take the country seriously,” he said on the show, which was live on-air and streamed on the internet on several platforms, including YouTube (archived here) and Facebook (archived here).
A shorter clip that captures the claim has been published on YouTube (archived here), and the claim can be found between minutes 5:17 and 5:40.

Verification
Since the claim was made on June 10, we first looked at the exchange rate for that day, using figures from the Bank of Ghana and Yahoo Finance.
Both the Bank of Ghana and Yahoo Finance reported the cedi trading at 11.50 and 11.60, respectively.
Even after we expanded the period to cover June 4 and June 12, we found that at no point did the cedi trade at GHC 12.60 to the dollar.
