A TikToker, @footballroyals, has alleged that ex-Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood served jail time on the charges of attempted rape and assault.
In a TikTok video posted on April 4, 2026, the TikToker listed the now Olympique de Marseille (OM) right winger as the fifth footballer worldwide to serve a prison term.
“Here are five footballers who went to prison. The first was sentenced to life. Number 5, Mason Greenwood. Once seen as Manchester United’s future, he was arrested in 2022 after serious allegations. He didn’t return to the pitch for over a year,” the video started.
The TikToker listed other renowned players, including Manchester City’s Benjamin Mendy and Brazilian stars Ronaldinho and Dani Alves.
The social media platform’s data revealed that the video has received over 12,200 likes, 104 comments, 1122 bookmarks, and 288 shares.
Commenting on the video, a TikToker @lindamcmanus277 said, “Greenwood did not go to prison. Get your facts right.”
Another TikToker @them cautioned the content creator to “Stop giving the fake information.”
DUBAWA decided to probe the claim due to the interest it has generated on social media.
Verification
DUBAWA’s research revealed that, contrary to the TikToker’s allegation, the England star did not serve prison time over the allegation made against him.
Instead, Manchester United suspended the striker for 18 months in 2022. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) subsequently dropped the charges of attempted rape and assault against him.
A CPS Spokesperson explained a “combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”
Mason was arrested following allegations of attempted rape, sexual assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour levelled against him by Harriet Robs in Jan. 2022.
Harriet shared images and audio on social media showing injuries and threats he allegedly received from Mason.
She, however, withdrew her cooperation, and after new material “came to light,” the CPS dropped all charges against Mason.
In a social media post following the CPS’s announcement in August 2023, Mason said, “I understand that people will judge me because of what they have seen and heard on social media, and I know people will think the worst.”
“I was brought up to know that violence or abuse is wrong. I did not do the things I was accused of, and in February, I was cleared of all charges,” he added.
Conclusion
Mason did not serve jail time over the allegations of attempted rape and assault levelled against him, contrary to the TikToker’s claim.
