A claim has gone viral in Ghana, saying the country’s Ministry of Health is recruiting more nurses to serve in public health facilities.

The notice, dated March 10, 2024, was contained in a document on a purported letterhead of the Ministry titled “Recruitment of General Nursing Applicants.”

“…[This is] a formal announcement to inform the [public] about [an] opportunity for interested individuals about an opening in the nursing field, including important details such as the applications, qualifications, and application instructions,” the document read.

The document was purportedly signed by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, Alhaji Hafiz Adam.

DUBAWA decided to investigate the claim as part of its campaign against disinformation in Ghana.

Verification

DUBAWA’s checks showed that the Ministry of Health is not recruiting any category of nurses, as alleged.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on March 11, 2024, the Ministry said it did not sanction the announcement and asked the public to disregard the claim.

“It has come to the notice of the Ministry of Health (MoH) that there is a public announcement dated March 10, 2024, in the mass media (Electronic media & online) about the recruitment of general nurses by the Ministry.

“We wish to state categorically that the Ministry did not make the public announcement in reference and should, therefore, be ignored,” the Ministry said.

Also, see a news report on the statement here.

A Google check by DUBAWA revealed the Ministry of Health had warned the public in April 2021, when such claims first surfaced online.

The Ministry of Health has maintained that it does not charge a fee for recruiting and general posting health workers across the country, contrary to the claim.

“By this press release, we wish to inform the general public that the Ministry has made significant progress in recruiting more general nurses and other health workers into the health sector.”

It is, therefore, not true that Ghana’s Ministry of Health is recruiting Ghanaians for the nursing field and posting health workers.

Conclusion

Ghana’s Ministry of Health said it is not recruiting individuals into nursing as claimed. It has asked Ghanaians to disregard any contrary posts.
