Verdict: This is False. The Accra-based GHOne TV, the media organisation interviewing Otchere-Darko, has described the claim as “fake news.” Also, a review of the video of the interview by DUBAWA showed the private legal practitioner did not make the claim attributed to him.
A flier with a quote attributed to Gabby Otchere-Darko, a cousin of President Nana Akufo-Addo, has been making the rounds on social media in Ghana.
The flier alleged the private legal practitioner had told Accra-based GHOne TV during an interview with the presenter, Bola Ray, that:
“Our grandfather was sensible enough to educate all his grandchildren, so all of us are well educated, that’s why [President] Akufo-Addo appointed many of his family members into his government.”
DUBAWA decided to probe the claim as part of its campaign against misinformation and disinformation in the West African country.
The Accra-based GHOne TV, the media organisation that interviewed Otchere-Darko, has described the claim as “fake news.”
In an Instagram and X (formerly) on Jan. 20, 2024, the media organisation wrote: “Fake News on Gabby Otchere Darko’s take on President Akufo-Addo appointing many of his family members.”
Also, Daily Insights GH, the online news portal allegedly behind the flier, had described the claim as “false” on its X account.
“This News item purported to be coming from @DailyInsightsGH is FALSE!” the media organisation wrote on Jan. 19, 2024.
Also, a review of the video of the interview by DUBAWA showed the private legal practitioner did not make the claim attributed to him.
“There are so many of us, and because they [my family members] got education early at a time [when] just a minority of Ghanaians were getting education, it gave them, if you like, to a point, head start,” he said of the President’s family, starting from minutes 0:01 to 0:44 of the video uploaded on X by GHOne TV.
Mr Otchere-Darko later asked the interviewer to list the cabinet ministers who are related to the President,
“How many ministers are in the cabinet? How many ministers are related to President Akufo-Addo?” he quizzed.
“[The] Roads Minister is there, and the Finance Minister is there. I think, top of my mind, these are the people,” the interviewer responded.
The senior partner and co-founder of Accra-based Africa Legal Associates later interrupted the interviewer to say that the “Roads Minister is not related to President Akufo-Addo.” as speculation has it.
A further search by DUBAWA online showed no credible media organisation in the West African country has published the purported claim.
It is untrue that Mr Otchere-Darko said President Akufo-Addo has appointed “a lot” of his family members into government because they are “well educated.” The claim is “false” and “fake”.
