Social media users misrepresent Koforidua Stadium with picture from Kenya

Claim: A photo has gone viral on social media, with some users claiming it is that of the refurbished Koforidua Sports Stadium, now the Koforidua Youth Resource Centre.

Verdict: The represented facility is Kenya’s Ulinzi Sports Complex, not Koforidua Sports Stadium.

Ghana’s president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, recently commissioned the newly refurbished Koforidua Sports Stadium, now the Koforidua Youth Resource Center.

In the run-up to the ceremony, social media was flooded with images purportedly representing the yet-to-be-commissioned facility.

With a Ghana national flag fixed on the image, the captions of several online users are filled with praise for the government.

Some of the posts can be found here, here, here, and here.

But is the viral picture purported to be the Koforidua Sports Stadium truly the same facility to be commissioned by the president? DUBAWA decided to investigate the claim.

Verification

Following a Google Reverse Image Search, we discovered the facility was the Ulinzi Sports Complex at Langata Garrison in Nairobi, Kenya.

We found an April 2022 online news publication where the image was used amongst several others.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday commissioned the ultra-modern Ulinzi Sports Complex at Langata Garrison in Nairobi County,” the story reads.

At about the same time, the same image was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the Kenyan government, giving the same narrative of the Kenyan president opening the facility.

Again, at the centre bottom of the viral image, we spotted that the watermark was the same as the one used in other official photos during the tenure of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The red area in the two photos emphasises that the facility is based in Kenya and not in Ghana.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Pius Enam Hadzide, visited the facility days before the commissioning.

In a news report by Citinewsroom.com, one of the country’s leading online news portals, the current images of the facility were published.

Conclusion

The represented facility in the viral social media posts is the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Kenya, not the Koforidua Sports Stadium in Ghana.
