Claim: A viral post claims that a photo shows an Indian migrant sitting next to actor Maisie Williams on a German metro, leading Der Spiegel journalists to rescue him and offer him a job and residence permit that changed his life.

Full Text

In early December 2025, a photograph began circulating widely on social media. The image shows a young man, described as an Indian migrant, sitting next to a woman, who, according to many posts, was identified as Maisie Williams.

The viral narrative claims the photo was taken in a German metro. According to the story, the man was undocumented, living in fear of deportation, travelling daily by train without money or papers.

According to reports, journalists from Der Spiegel located him in Munich. Moved by his plight and his refusal to react to the “celebrity” beside him, the story goes, they offered him a postal-service job (€800/month), which then enabled him to regularise his residency.

The message spread like wildfire on social media with many accounts and pages posting the ‘heartwarming” story across all platforms, including X, Facebook, and Instagram.

On Facebook, Grace Edirin Eblugbake, whose account claims she studied mass communication, garnered 4,900 likes, 311 comments, and 152 shares after sharing with her over 12k followers.

On the same Facebook platform on December 4, a page with 23k followers, Funkismm had over 100 shares, 89 comments, and 1,100 likes after posting it.

Nonetheless, the same story can be seen on Facebook here, here, and here.

Meanwhile, on X, an account, @GanKanchi, racked over 499k views after sharing with his 10.6k followers. Likewise, dozens of accounts have followed suit by posting the same claim, along with the attached photo, to their followers.

On Instagram, it has also spread across many walls. Tharkiiduniya, with over 800k followers, shared the same story on their platform. They garnered 18.1k likes, 159 comments, and some shares. Also, an Indian account, indiaourhome, with over 40k followers, posted on their timeline.

Verification

DUBAWA, using Google reverse image searches, archive checks, and analysis of the carriage, finds no evidence supporting the claims:

  • Location of the photo: The carriage design, seating layout, lighting, and other visual details do not match those of German metro trains. Instead, they correspond to the style of the London Underground. Key mismatches include the handrails and signage typical of UK stations, absent in German metros.
  • Date and origins: The image dates back to 2019, not 2025, undermining claims that it depicted a “recent” event on a German metro after it resurfaced on December 4, 2025.
  • Identity of the woman: The woman in the photo bears a superficial resemblance to the actress, but is unidentified in the original metadata. Williams’ verified social media (Instagram @maisie_williams, last active April 30, 2025 shows no Berlin trip or migrant advocacy posts in early December.
  • Der Spiegel involvement: A comprehensive review of Der Spiegel’s archives and public reporting shows no article or coverage of any such incident. There is no record of an investigation, job offer, or change in legal status for a migrant corresponding to the viral story.
  • Also, there is no publicly available evidence; thus, no contracts, no documented testimony, and no credible reporting supporting the claim that the man was offered a job, obtained legal residence, or had his life “transformed” as described.

The photo is misidentified (the wrong person, in the wrong place), the backstory is unsupported, and no reputable media outlet corroborates the claim.

Conclusion

The widely shared story about an Indian migrant sitting next to Maisie Williams on a German metro, followed by a miraculous job offer and legal residency, is entirely false.
