A viral video making rounds on various social media platforms, including Facebook X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, claims that Ghana’s vice president and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, sang a Chinese song during a public speech.

The video has attracted millions of views across different platforms.

Many have jumped on the video on TikTok to create their own content.

The video has left many social media users confused, and there is a raging debate about whether it is fake or real.

DUBAWA’s checks using Shazam showed that the song in the video was a rendition of an old Chinese song, Jīnshēng yuán, sung by Chuan Zi.

Verification

A Google Reverse Image Search revealed that the viral video was cut from Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia’s 2020 speech at the Great Hall of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)..

Assessing the full event video coverage on Net2 TV’s YouTube channel, Bawumia’s speech, which was 40.32 minutes to 2 hours and 9 minutes, showed that he didn’t sing the supposed Chinese song.

A careful analysis of the viral video shows a vast disparity in Bawumia’s movement, posture, and tone of voice compared to the original video on the Net2 TV YouTube channel.

This gives reasonable evidence that the viral video was doctored with the help of AI to make Bawumia appear to be singing a Chinese song.

Checks across major media platforms did not indicate any such performance by the Vice President.

Conclusion

The viral video showing Bawumia singing a Chinese song is false. He did not sing through his speech in the original video shared on YouTube in 2020.
