A Twitter user, @fgmlearn, has shared a video depicting a distressing scene of women purportedly from Northern Nigeria rushing for food. In the post, the user blames Ahmed Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, criticising his perceived lack of action to enhance food security within the country. The user alleges that President Tinubu appears more focused on aligning with France and pursuing aggressive actions against Niger rather than addressing the pressing issue of hunger in Northern Nigeria.

The user claimed, “But what is Tinubu actually doing? The Hunger in Northern Nigeria is becoming alarming. Food prices are through the roof. Yet he is more interested in playing puppet to France and attacking Niger!! Watch Nigerians Jostle for food!”

The video on Twitter has amassed over 500,000 views with over 400 likes. It was published on August  16, 2023, at 7:26 am.

Verification

DUBAWA first used the Invid Video Verification tool to extract key frames from the viral video. The extracted key frames were expected to help determine if the incident happened in Northern Nigeria during Ahmed Tinubu’s regime as president of Nigeria. A Google reverse image was then conducted on these keyframes to find the veracity of these images. It was revealed that the video has been in circulation since December 2022.

We discovered that a Facebook user, Nupe Asali, published the video on December 4, 2022. Similarly, a news portal in a Hausa Language on December 5, 2022, had also captured the incident on its platform. Using Google Translate, the caption of the report reads,

“The video of Northern girls of the rice food at the wedding hall has shocked the internet.”

A post by another user, @ShehuSani, shared the same video on December 4, 2022.

It is, however, untrue to associate the video with Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s regime as president because he was sworn in as President of Nigeria on Monday, May 29, 2023

Nevertheless, DUBAWA’s searches could not resolve that the incident indeed happened in Northern Nigeria.

Conclusion

The claim that women purportedly rushed for food did not happen during Ahmed Tinubu’s presidency. Also, the claim that the incident happened in Northern Nigeria could not be established.
