A Facebook user shared a picture of people in blue jumpsuits standing still along a street which he claimed happened around Circle also known as Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra.

He claimed to have approached one of them, and upon inquiring why they were on the street, the reply he received was,

“Sir, I don’t even know what we’re doing, it’s ₵100 daily pay, from 7 am to 5 pm…It’s to just stand, and be turning up and down.”

Many people have expressed interest in the opportunity because of the amount the Facebook user alleged was given to the participants.

Data available on the social media platform showed the post had been shared 108 times, liked 216 times, and received 131 comments.

DUBAWA decided to probe the claim.

Verification

The results of a Google Reverse image search conducted by DUBAWA showed the incident did not happen anywhere around the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra as claimed, but rather in Lagos in Nigeria.

The search traced the picture to a post that was first shared on X, formerly Twitter by an account, MBAH on Sept. 20, 2022.

“Nothing fit shock me again for this Lagos because who are these ones #MenInBlue #ConfidenceIs,” the X user wrote a year ago.

A further search using Duplichecker, another reverse image tool revealed the post is similar to an earlier one shared by a Facebook page, B.O.D Republic which the page’s transparency showed it is managed from Nigeria.

“Na so I saw them in Lagos road yesterday, and I approached one of them, and he told me: “Sir, I don’t even know what we’re doing, na 10k daily pay, from 7 am to 5 pm… Na to just stand and be turning up and down, you can join tomorrow own,” the post reads.

The story shared on Sept. 28, 2023, at 8:22 a.m. was subsequently shared by other Facebook users here, here, here, here, here, and here whose profile and account transparency showed someone from Nigeria is managing them.

Duplichecker further showed that the image appeared to be one of those shared on Sept. 20, 2022, by Nigerian company Sanlam Nigeria on Facebook as part of a campaign to bolster the confidence of its clients. You can click here to see the picture.

“We are bringing something big your way this week. It’s the new face of confidence,” the Nigerian insurance company wrote in 2022.

It is, therefore, not true that the scene of people in blue jumpsuits standing along the street and wearing nose masks happened anywhere in Accra.

Conclusion

Results of DUBAWA’s search have shown the picture came from a campaign by a Nigerian insurance company, Sanlam Nigeria, in 2022 to encourage its customers in the West African country to live with confidence.
