Claim: Social media users claim Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has rejected BBC’s documentary on the late TB Joshua.
Verdict: False. The alleged video has been manipulated. The footage used to make the claim stems from President Bola Tinubu’s 2024 New Year speech, which he made on Jan 1, 2024, when the BBC documentary on the late TB Joshua had not yet been released.
On Jan. 14, 2024, a video surfaced on Facebook, shared by the user “ooasha_yourthroughtstalk,” alleging that Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has dismissed the documentary produced by the BBC concerning the late renowned Nigerian prophet, Temitope Balogun Joshua, widely known as TB Joshua.
The accompanying caption of the video asserts, “Tinubu rejects TB Joshua documentary by BBC, says they hate him because he is from a black country.”
In the video, President Tinubu is allegedly heard saying, “I, the President of Nigeria, reject every document and evidence made by the BBC against our noble prophet. Prophet TB Joshua was a good man. And he brought many foreigners to Lagos while I was governor. They hate him because he is from a black country.”
This video has also been published on TikTok, garnering substantial viewership. Notably, the video incorporates clips of TB Joshua showcasing his “miracles”. The claim has gained notable traction on Facebook, amassing over 18,000 views and over 6,000 shares.
BBC Africa Eye Investigation on TB Joshua
In Jan. 2024, BBC Africa Eye published a three-part documentary “Disciples: The Cult of TB Joshua.” The documentary captured testimonies of people who said that they were abused and tortured by the late Temitope Balogun Joshua, founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN).
The former SCOAN members featured in the documentary recounted chilling tales of alleged atrocities, including rape and forced abortions, committed by TB Joshua. The exposé further delved into the revelation that TB Joshua manipulated and staged “miracle healings,” deceiving millions of global viewers.
Is there any response from Bola Tinubu regarding the documentary?
No! The Facebook user credited Channels Television, a Nigerian channel, as the source. Due to this, DUBAWA’s investigation focused on videos from Channels Television.
DUBAWA used an Invid Video Verification tool to authenticate the video, breaking the footage into keyframes. Google Reverse Images Search was conducted on the keyframes leading us to President Bola Tinubu’s 2024 New Year speech, broadcast by Channels Television on Jan. 1, 2024.
The BBC documentary on the late TB Joshua was released on Jan. 8, 2024, thus raising doubts about the claim’s veracity.
DUBAWA also checked Channels TV’s official website and social media channels (YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook) for any relevant information but found no evidence supporting the alleged video, except for President Tinubu’s New Year speech sharing a similar backdrop. Notably, the audio in the video does not synchronise with the president’s lip movements in the authentic speech.
Given the gravity of such a statement from the president, news portals would have reported it. However, a search revealed no such reporting on any news platform.
The video is a manipulated version of President Tinubu’s 2024 New Year speech, and it is unrelated to the documentary made by the BCC on the late Prophet TB Joshua.
