A viral interview video on social media claims the government is rolling out a new financial scheme to alleviate poverty among citizens.

In the two-minute forty-six-second video, CitiTV, now ChannelOne TV, media broadcaster Umaru Sanda Amadu is seen interviewing Ghanaian actor John Dumelo, now a member of parliament for Ayawaso West Woguon.

“Tens of thousands of Ghanaians over the age of 40 are quitting their jobs and retiring. All this thanks to a new financial platform developed by the government,” Umaru said in the introduction of the video.

Dumelo continues to explain how this financial scheme works in the video’s ensuing minutes.

“With a small investment of 3035 Ghanaian cedis, they can earn up to 12,150 Ghanaian cedis per week. That is absolutely realistic. It is like an early retirement or promotion that multiplies your savings many times over,” Dumelo said in the video.

The video can potentially deceive and swindle unsuspecting social media users, so DUBAWA decided to investigate further.

Verification

The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has communicated the government’s plans, decisions, and initiatives to the general public for the current administration through press briefings or releases on traditional and social media, respectively. As of the time of publication of this report, there has been no communication on the said scheme.

Also, the current government has introduced several initiatives and policies. However, DUBAWA’s checks reveal no such financial scheme or initiative has been introduced.

Further checks reveal that CitiFM/ CitiTV (now ChannelOneTV), the media outlet Umaru works for, has cautioned users of the circulating video in an X post.

The post was captioned:

“DISCLAIMER: FRAUD ALERT

Channel One TV has learned that a fraudulent AI-generated video bearing the Channel One TV set and the image of one of our journalists is being circulated in an attempt to scam unsuspecting members of the public.

We wish to state categorically that:

•  This video is NOT from Channel One TV.

•  It has NOT been produced, endorsed, or authorised by Channel One TV or any of our journalists.

•  The content is false, deceptive, and malicious.”

The media outlet cautioned users not to engage with any links attached to the video and to report it on any social media platform where it appeared.

Conclusion

The claim that the government has introduced a new financial scheme is false. The video interview of Umaru Sanda with John Dumelo is AI-generated.
