Facebook users, including OGYA98.3fm, Nhyira FM and news portals, including adomfmonline.com have circulated claims that the Minority in Parliament has issued a press statement distancing itself from the Independent Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong.

The MP was reportedly detained on May 12, 2026, at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Details surrounding the alleged arrest remain unclear.

In the statement making rounds online, purportedly from the minority caucus, the group is said to have urged law enforcement authorities to deal with the MP “mercilessly.”

Part of the alleged statement reads, “We wish to state unequivocally that the minority caucus distances itself from the said MP pending the outcome of investigations. He does not speak for, act for, or represent the minority caucus in any capacity.”

The document further claims the minority is distancing itself due to the MP’s alleged ties with the majority in Parliament, the NDC.

“We further remind the public that long before his election to Parliament, the Asante Akyem North MP had well-documented business and political engagements with elements of the majority (NDC) and its affiliates. These relationships are matters of public record. His past associations, dealings, and benefactions are personal to him and the NDC, not the minority caucus,” the statement adds.

Given that the claim is attributed to an official parliamentary body, it carries significant weight and could influence public opinion or trigger political reactions. This makes verification necessary.

Verification

DUBAWA first contacted the Minority Caucus in Parliament to confirm the authenticity of the statement. Two members of the caucus leadership were reached via WhatsApp.

The First Deputy Minority Whip and MP for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, and the Second Deputy Minority Whip and MP for Weija Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, both dismissed the document as fake. They clarified that no official statement has been issued by the caucus regarding the alleged incident.

A review of the circulating document also revealed several inconsistencies, including spelling and grammatical errors. Keywords such as “Netherlands” and “Asante Akyem” were misspelt, raising further doubts about its authenticity. Such errors are uncommon in official parliamentary communications.

Additionally, a statement of this nature on a sensitive issue involving an MP would typically be reported by credible media outlets. However, checks across multiple news platforms showed no such publication.

Conclusion

The purported statement attributed to the minority caucus regarding the alleged arrest of an independent MP in the Netherlands is false. The caucus has denied issuing the statement and confirmed that the document is not authentic.
