Social media platforms have become a major source of information during breaking news events. However, they have also become fertile grounds for the spread of misinformation, especially when official investigations are still underway.

This was evident following the disappearance and subsequent death of 20-year-old University of Cape Coast (UCC) student, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.

After reports emerged that the Level 200 Biological Sciences student had been found dead days after she was declared missing, several social media accounts began circulating claims that she had been discovered on campus with one of her breasts severed.

One of the most widely shared versions of the claim was published by the Facebook page Crime Check TV GH on June 14, 2026.

The post was captioned: “MISSING UCC STUDENT FOUND DEAD WITH BREAST SEVERED.”

It further claimed that the student had been found on the university campus with one of her breasts missing after she allegedly informed friends that she was going to meet a boy before her disappearance.

At the time DUBAWA captured the post, it had generated approximately 1,900 reactions, 461 comments, and 71 shares, indicating significant public engagement.

The post was accompanied by photographs of the deceased student and a missing-person flyer that had circulated earlier when she was reported missing.

Nonetheless, we also observed similar claims being shared by other Facebook pages and social media accounts.

A post by CX-Chillxone alleged that the student was a victim of ritual killing and claimed she had been found with one breast removed. The post generated approximately 495 reactions, 292 comments and 22 shares.

Another post by Undercover TV attracted approximately 6,500 reactions, 521 comments and 695 shares, while a separate post by Bongo Ideas generated approximately 5,700 reactions, 1,100 comments and 197 shares.

On X, a post by @IndosTv_ amplified the allegation, garnering approximately 59,000 views, 376 likes, 37 reposts, and 30 comments.

Collectively, the posts reached thousands of users and fuelled widespread speculation regarding the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

Many users accepted the claims as factual and used the comment sections to discuss possible motives behind the alleged crime.

One commenter wrote: “You see…one breast off… all because she wanted honey from rich boys.”

Another stated: “Girls of today den money, maybe kraa she has a serious bf wey no get cash.”

A concerned user wrote: “Dear God, I bring my sisters before you.”

Some users, however, questioned the reports’ accuracy and urged caution. One commenter observed: “I learnt she was found at the beach so I don’t know why Crime Check didn’t add that.”

The widespread circulation of the claim prompted DUBAWA to investigate whether the student was indeed found on campus with one of her breasts severed.

Verification

DUBAWA reviewed official statements released by the University of Cape Coast, reports by credible media organisations and information from the Ghana Police Service.

The University of Cape Coast announced on June 14, 2026, that the body of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu had been recovered after residents reported that a body had washed ashore at the Hutchland Beach area near Duakor in Cape Coast.

According to the university, police officers who initially examined the body found no visible signs of physical injury.

The statement explained that after the body was transferred to the mortuary, family members later identified the deceased as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.

The university further noted that observations made by relatives during the identification process were consistent with the investigators’ preliminary findings.

Contrary to claims circulating on social media, the university’s statement made no reference to any severed breast, mutilation or missing body parts.

DUBAWA also reviewed reports published by Graphic Online and MyJoyOnline.

Graphic Online reported that the missing student had been found dead on a beach after days of searching, but did not mention any form of mutilation.

Similarly, MyJoyOnline reported that police investigators found no visible marks of assault on the body and indicated that a post-mortem examination would determine the exact cause of death.

The story further established that the body was not found on the UCC campus as alleged in the viral posts. Official accounts consistently stated that the body was recovered from the Hutchland Beach area near Duakor.

Meanwhile, DUBAWA found no police report, medical report, university statement, or credible news publication supporting the claim that one of the student’s breasts had been severed.

Rather, the available evidence shows that the allegation originated in social media speculation that preceded official findings.

The University of Cape Coast subsequently urged the public to refrain from circulating misinformation that could undermine investigations and cause additional distress to the bereaved family.

Conclusion

The claim that missing University of Cape Coast student Innocentia Atsufui Avinu was found dead on campus with one of her breasts severed is false.
